How Maryland's point system works
Maryland tracks points within a 2-year window. Points stop being "current" 2 years after the violation date. The MVA takes different actions based on your current total:
No MVA action.
Warning letter from MVA.
Required to enroll in a Driver Improvement Program (DIP).
Notice of Suspension. License may be suspended.
Notice of Revocation. License will be revoked.
Frequently asked
Do camera tickets add points?
No. Maryland speed cameras, red light cameras, and school bus cameras issue civil citations that don't add MVA points to your driving record. Only convictions for officer-issued traffic tickets add points.
Do points add up if I just pay the ticket?
Yes. Paying a moving violation citation counts as a conviction. The MVA adds points to your record. If you don't want points, you must request a trial and either win the case or get the charge reduced.
How long do points stay on my record?
Points remain on your driving record indefinitely but are only considered "current" for MVA action purposes for 2 years from the violation date. After 3 years, the violation is no longer publicly visible to insurance companies or employers.
